WRP is run by a French association (1901 Law) called “World Radio Paris”, created by expats in 2003. WRP finally received a terrestrial broadcast license in 2014. It now serves the greater Paris area on DAB+.
A LOCAL BROADCAST MEDIA FOR NON-FRENCH SPEAKERS
WRP was set up to offer a communications’ platform to anyone who wants to broadcast in English in Paris. Anyone can volunteer to host a show or take part in the operations helping run the station. We target the estimated 200,000 English speakers who make up part of international community in Paris: Not necessarily native English-speakers, but also people who have a need to get informed about Paris, the rest of France and the world, and who doesn’t speak French well enough to get their news from French media.
A SOCIAL ENDEAVOUR
WRP is Breaking isolation: From immigrant to expat and refugee between. The station motto. The WRP radio project is an essential communication tool helping to prevent isolation that can happen when you’re outside off the French language but living in the country. Isolation – a human sensation that’s usually hidden and seldom spoken about – but one which, broadcasting on the new digital frequencies (DAB), along with phone apps and online on a live stream.
A LISTENER-SUPPORTED PROJECT
Your regular financial support help this project stay an essential communication tool. Also operating as a not-for-profit organisation that depends to a high extent on everyone working in a voluntary capacity at all levels. We run a very horizontal and dynamic line.
A COMING OF (DAB+) AGE STORY
The WRP radio project launched in June 2014 on DAB+ digital. This came after having already been alive and kicking for 10 years. We were broadcasting online, on cable and on mobile devices through an App. All these years we kept lobbying the French licensing authority (CSA) and obtained a 10-year license on DAB to broadcast on the airwaves with 4 KiloWatts of power, enough to cover the Greater Paris region, all the way to the airports. WRP is the only station available in your car or jogging in the park exclusively using the English language on air.
TIRELESS VOLUNTEERS & JOURNALISTS
Association World Radio Paris is, under French law, a registered not-for-profit association. Our collective activity and output is controlled and evaluated by a volunteer board of 15 professionals incl. NPR, BBC, CNN, The Africa Report, Relax News and AFP. Our volunteer journalists work tirelessly, and their efforts have brought listeners locally produced shows with original and long-running programs including Basic Black (bi-weekly) and Artipeous (bi-weekly), Turning Points (monthly) and The Paris Culture Files (monthly).
THE WRP LOCAL HOUR
We have a Daily News Bulletin. This airs at the top of each one of the four local hours broadcast each day from 6am to 5pm. And we have a frequent What’s On Paris Audioshot. Listeners hear these on air and can also subscribe to receive them as WRP Audioshots by email – like a morning caffeine hit – reflecting the social, commercial and economic reasons why different pockets of people which we call, anglophone communities, make Paris their home. The other 20 hours a day are a mix of great shows from international broadcasters like the BBC or NPR.
SOCIAL MEDIA SAVVY
We’re making noise! We engage the WRP listening audience on twitter, facebook, LinkedIn and mixcloud. After air-play, we engage listeners with posts about the shows, at times reflective of higher levels of eyeball-engagement. We’re exploring sharing patterns and engaging posts are on the increase. On twitter we share from the lives of Franco-Anglo Chamber of Commerce and also more homegrown Paris-based bloggers.
NEW FOR 2016
In Feb 2016 we launched new shows including A Sunday at the Atelier by an artist and guilder, and The World Travel Show. In March/April we introduced a show focusing on immigrant experience packaged as Paris sans Maquillage, then towards the summer our photography show Raw Image was introduced, and so on. AND FINALLY, THE TOURIST CONNECTION
This can’t be avoided, and we embrace it. It’s a challenge. But so is maintaining the whole of the WRP radio project. We’re in it for the long run. So, The City of Lights is visited by 30 millions people annually, of which 20 million speak English. They too can hear the frequent What’s On Paris Audioshot, which acts as a great connecting platform for sponsor and advertisers. Subscribe to our Newsletter on our homepage – Click here to go there.
